Sunset is many San Franciscans' favorite neighborhood. It is just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean and UCSF. Despite foggy weather, it provides the laid back feeling of a small town. In 1897, the University of California laid their new medical campus on the slopes of Mount Sutro. The school brought more residents to the neighborhood including students who studied medicine, dentistry and pharmaceuticals. In the 1980s, San Francisco and Bay Area real estate prices went through the roof.
